Галерия Синтезис, Гьоте-институт и Френският институт представят изложбата „Букурещка трилогия“ на Антон Роланд Лауб с куратор Соня Вос. Тя обединява три проекта на родения в Букурещ фотограф. „Подвижни църкви“ е визуално изследване на един абсурден епизод от близкото минало на Румъния – преместването на седем църкви като част от инициирания от Чаушеску план за „систематизация“. „Последната Коледа (на Чаушеску)“ задава въпроси за справедливостта и институционалната памет за Румънската революция през 1989 г. Серията „Минериада“ разглежда неизказаната травма, свързана със събитията от 1990 г., когато хиляди лоялни на правителството миньори са докарани в Букурещ, за да участват в бруталното потушаване на проевропейски протести.
„От повече от десет години Антон Роланд Лауб използва различни фотографски и наративни подходи, за да осмисли най-новата история на Румъния. Роден в Букурещ, където като дете живее в последните години на комунизма, той става свидетел на радикалната трансформация на историческия център на столицата, който е драматично разрушен под ударите на мегаломанските стремежи на Николае Чаушеску. В младежките си години Антон проследява широко отразения в медиите край на режима и падането на диктатора – неговото бягство, фиктивния съдебен процес и екзекуцията му. След като емигрира в Германия през 2000 г., Лауб продължава да наблюдава неспособността на страната си да се изправи пред неразрешените проблеми, свързани с комунизма и събитията след 1989 г., както и трудния преход към демокрация.
Опирайки се на исторически артефакти – градски карти, инженерни чертежи, архивни снимки и семейни документи, както и на фотографии, направени по време на честите му посещения в Румъния, Лауб се връща назад във времето, за да разгърне три проекта, които съчетават личните спомени със следи от градската среда и критичен поглед. „Подвижни църкви“, „Последната Коледа (на Чаушеску)“ и „Минериада“ оформят трилогия, в която се преплитат сатира, аналитичен подход и меланхолична интроспекция, задвижени едновременно от сарказъм и от надежда за едно помирено общество, което най-после да може да се изправи лице в лице с миналото си. Публикувана в три тома от издателство „Kehrer“, пълната трилогия на Антон Роланд Лауб е представена за първи път в изложбен формат на стените на галерия Синтезис.“

Освен тур с автора и куратора съпътстващата програма на изложбата включва и българската премиера на филма „The New Year That Never Came“ на режисьора Богдан Мурешану, който печели наградата за най-добър филм в секцията „Orizzonti“ на фестивала във Венеция през 2024 г.; лекция на Дани Герка, който ще говори за съвременната румънска фотография и своята работа като артист и куратор, както и представяне на селекция от фотокниги на немското издателство „Kehrer“. В нея са включени и трите книги на Антон Роланд Лауб, които ще могат да бъдат закупени от ФотоСинтезис по време на изложбата.
📎 За автора:
Антон Роланд Лауб е визуален артист, роден в Букурещ, който живее и работи в Берлин. Има магистърска степен от Weissensee Academy of Art, Берлин, а преди това завършва New School for Photography, Берлин, и специалност „Медии и комуникации“ в Университета в Букурещ.
Сериите от „Букурещката трилогия“ са отличавани многократно. „Подвижни църкви“ е номинирана за New Discovery Award на фестивала Rencontres d’Arles и е включена в Седмото триенале на фотографията и архитектурата, Брюксел. Едноименната книгата е финалист на Luma Dummy Book Award и на Unseen Photography Festival, Амстердам, а по-късно е селектирана и за изложбата „Най-вълнуващите фотокниги от Централна и Източна Европа“ в Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre, Будапеща. Книгата „Последната Коледа (на Чаушеску)“ е включена в дългия списък на German Photo Book Award. Проектът „Минериада“ е реализиран с подкрепата на Visual Arts Research Stipend на Senate Department for Culture and Europe, Берлин, и с Publication Grant на Stiftung Kulturwerk, Бон.
Негови самостоятелни изложбата са показвани в Bucharest Municipality Museum, църквата Църква „Сен Жермен де Пре“, Париж; Kaunas Photography Gallery; Гьоте-институт, Букурещ и Румънски културен институт, Берлин. 📎 За куратора:
Соня Вос живее между Париж и Берлин. Сред нейните кураторски проекти е изложбата на Sophie Calle в Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature, Париж (2017–2018 г.). Тя проявява специален интерес към източногерманската фотография. През 2019 г. представя изложбата „Restless Bodies. East German Photography 1980–1989“ в рамките на фестивала Rencontres d’Arles. По-късно разширява изследванията си и към фотографията от 70-те и 80-те години в източноевропейскте страни, по-конкретно Румъния и Литва.
Тя работи и със съвременни артисти, като Антон Роланд Лауб, Isabelle Le Minh и Tarrah Krajnak. Паралелно проучва архиви на фотографи, като Kusukazu Uraguchi, чиято изложба „Shima no Ama“ е представена на фестивала Rencontres d’Arles през 2024 г. и в музея Huis Marseille в Амстердам през 2025 г. Последният ѝ кураторски проект е изложбата на Sibylle Bergemann „The Monument“ във Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, Париж, която продължава до януари 2026 г. и е придружена с фотокнига, издадена от „Kerber“.
🔹 Изложбата „Букурещка трилогия“ е продуцирана от Галерия Синтезис с подкрепата на Гьоте-институт България, Посолството на Франция в България, Френския институт в България и ФотоСинтезис и в партньорство с Посолството на Румъния в България, Kehrer Verlag (Хайделберг) и Scânteia (Букурещ). Synthesis Gallery, Goethe-Institute and the French Institute are pleased to present “A Bucharest Trilogy” – an exhibition by Anton Roland Laub, curated by Sonia Voss. The exhibition consists of three series. “Mobile Churches” is a visual exploration of an absurd chapter of Romania’s recent history: the displacement of seven churches in Bucharest under Ceaușescu’s “systematisation” program. “Last Christmas (of Ceaușescu)” poses questions about the justice discourse and institutional memory of the Romanian Revolution. “Mineriada” addresses the unspoken trauma of physical violence committed back in 1990, when thousands of miners incited by the government were brought to Bucharest to brutally crush pro-European protests.
“For more than ten years, Anton Roland Laub has been using various photographic and narrative strategies to confront the recent history of his native Romania. Born in Bucharest, where he lived as a child during the final years of Communism, he witnessed the radical transformation of the historic centre of the capital, dramatically destroyed under the blows of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s megalomaniacal folly. As a young teenager, he followed the highly publicised end of the regime and the fall of the dictator – his escape, his mock trial, his execution. Having emigrated to Germany in 2000, Laub continues to observe his country, its inability to confront the unresolved dramas linked to Communism and the events after 1989, as well as its difficult transition to democracy.
Drawing on historical artefacts – city maps, engineering drawings, archival photographs – as well as family documents and photographs taken during regular visits to Romania, Laub travels back in time to unfold three series that blend personal memories, traces gathered from the urban space, and critical inventories. “Mobile Churches”, “Last Christmas (of Ceauşescu)”, and “Mineriada” thus form a trilogy at the crossroads of satire, analysis, and melancholic introspection, driven as much by sarcasm as by the hope for a reconciled society that would finally face its past head-on. Published in three volumes by Kehrer, Laub’s complete trilogy is presented in Synthesis Gallery for the first time on exhibition walls.”

In addition to the tour with the artist and the curator, the exhibition’s accompanying program includes the Bulgarian premiere of “The New Year That Never Came”, a film directed by Bogdan Mureșanu, winner of the Best Film Award in the “Orizzonti” section at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. The program also features a lecture by Dani Gherca, who will speak about contemporary Romanian photography and his work as an artist and curator, as well as a presentation of selected photobooks by Kehrer Verlag. Among them are three books by Anton Roland Laub, which will be available for purchase at PhotoSynthesis during the exhibition.
📎 About the artist: Anton Roland Laub is a Bucharest-born visual artist who lives and works in Berlin. He holds a master degree from the Weissensee Academy of Art, Berlin. Previously, he completed his studies at the New School for Photography, Berlin, and graduated in Media and Communication Science from the University of Bucharest.
The series from “A Bucharest Trilogy” have received numerous distinctions. “Mobile Churches” was nominated for the New Discovery Award at the Rencontres d’Arles festival and was part of the 7th Triennial of Photography and Architecture, Brussels. Laub was also a finalist for the Luma Dummy Book Award and the Unseen Photography Festival, Amsterdam, and was later selected for the exhibition “The Most Exciting Photobooks from Central and Eastern Europe” at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Centre, Budapest. “Last Christmas (of Ceauşescu)” was longlisted for the German Photo Book Award. The “Mineriada” project was realised with the support from the Visual Arts Research Stipend of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, Berlin, and the Publication Grant from Stiftung Kulturwerk, Bonn.
Laub has had solo exhibitions, among others, at the Bucharest Municipality Museum; Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris; Kaunas Photography Gallery; Goethe-Institut, Bucharest; Romanian Cultural Institute, Berlin. He has been presented at the Rencontres d’Arles festival; Format Photography Biennale, Derby; European Month of Photography, Berlin; PhotoSaintGermain, Paris; Photo Is:rael, Tel Aviv.
His works have been reviewed and featured in the international press and are held in public as well as in private collections, such as the Book and Media Art Collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; the collection of Rencontres d’Arles; Berlin Wall Foundation.
📎 About the curator:
Sonia Voss is an exhibition curator based in Paris and Berlin. She curated, among others, an exhibition of Sophie Calle at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris (2017–18). Over the years, she has focused on East German photography. In this framework, she has presented “Restless Bodies. East German Photography 1980–89” at the Rencontres d’Arles (2019) and edited several publications related to this scene. Since then, she has extended her research to other Eastern European territories, particularly Romania and Lithuania, in the 1970s and 1980s.
She also accompanies contemporary artists such as Anton Roland Laub, Isabelle Le Minh, and Tarrah Krajnak and occasionally delves into archives – most recently those of Kusukazu Uraguchi (Rencontres d’Arles, 2024; Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, 2025) and Sibylle Bergemann, whose series “The Monument” she presented at the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris in 2025, with an accompanying book published by Kerber.

🌱 Synthesis Gallery was founded in 2013 as a part of PhotoSynthesis – a photography hub, which houses the leading store for photo and video equipment, a print center, photobook library, café and event space.
